Polyphthalamide—lean competition for metal

VESTAMID® HTplus has been specially developed as a substitute for metal in conventional metal applications. It is a polyphthalamide (PPA)-based semi-crystalline material that is stable at high temperatures and offers an excellent price-performance ratio. It combines high temperature resistance with excellent resistance to chemicals and outstanding mechanical properties. This property profile makes it the material of choice in, for example, supporting the trend toward miniaturization with high-performance materials in the electronics industry, or in reducing weight, even under the engine hood, in automotive construction. VESTAMID® HTplus has proven its toughness as the material used for the charge air duct in a Lotus Exige sports car, despite temperatures of up to 170°C in the vicinity of the engine and the high stress resistance required in motor racing.

Bio-based versions are also available: The VESTAMID® M3000 series PA10T-based products are 50 percent based on bio-renewables.

Product range

Evonik offers the following product lines, based on PA6T and PA10T:
VESTAMID® HTplus M are reinforced and unreinforced injection-molding grades, some of which are flame retardant.
VESTAMID® HTplus R are injection-molding grades that have been developed specifically for plastic-rubber composites free from adhesion promoters.
VESTAMID® HTplus F are extrusion grades for filament production.

Applications

VESTAMID® HTplus polyphthalamide compounds are thus ideally suited for use in classic metal applications, for example as material for housings of pumps and filter systems or for use in vehicles in the vicinity of the engine, as in the charge air duct. Evonik offers VESTAMID® HTplus in filler-free standard grades as well as in basic grades for injection molding with a glass fiber content of up to 60 percent. These represent the starting point for the development of specialty grades to satisfy all application requirements.
