Gas Piping

VESTAMID® LX9030, a high molecular polyamide 12 from Evonik, is suitable for production of gas distribution pipes in the pressure range of 10 to a maximum of 20 bar; only steel piping was used previously for this purpose. The material conforms to the international gas piping standard ISO 22621 (Plastics piping systems for the supply of gaseous fuels for maximum operating pressures up to and including 2 MPa (20 bar). Polyamide (PA). Part 1: General, Part 2: Pipes, Part 3: Fittings).

In compliance with ISO 9080, the MRS value is 18 MPa, which significantly exceeds the values for PE and PA 11 that are used in low-pressure piping. (MRS, the minimum required strength, is a measure of the minimum strength required to withstand internal circumferential stress from water for 50 years at 20°C.)

In May 2008, moreover, TÜV Nord Systems GmbH & Co. KG and SKZ TeConA GmbH approved the use of VESTAMID® LX9030 specifically for high-pressure gas installations in accordance with GasHLVO. The final report emphasizes explicitly that piping systems with PA 12 from Evonik can be operated safely at working pressures of up to 18 bar.
